Learning – Overrated or Underrated

The other day I read in the News – A man completed 150+ online courses during this pandemic. Everybody says – keep learning, learn xxx technology, learn the xxx language, learn this, learn that, etc. The more learnings you have, the more successful you’ll be (as it’s perceived more learning = more knowledge).

These days there are so many learning platforms as well (all courses flat 80% Off). But are we really enrolling in these courses to really learn, or merely complete them? I see a lot of people today in the Tech space, who do these courses in “My learnings” but don’t apply it when the time comes (because it goes and sits in My learnings).

Learning should lead to a change in – thinking, knowledge, skill, behavior, and attitude.

If we aren’t able to bring in this change in us, in any of the above-mentioned aspects, then, Are we really Learning? Just for the sake of publishing certificates of course completion or to add a few more skills to your resume, if you consider it learning then, it would be the biggest mistake.

Our learnings should be reflected in our personalities, not our profiles. But the sad reality is people judge us based on things written on our profiles and this is the reason many of us have so many certificates of learnings attached to our profiles.

I see many resumes (for the interviews I take) have so many skills and learnings in them. I curiously ask them, what is their latest learning. – They start telling me about a tech certification skill that they learned a year ago.

The essence of the word – Learning is either confused, misunderstood, or lost here.

The latest learning could be as simple as – learning to use a new gadget, learning a few words in a different language, learning an art form, learning to make coffee, learning to drive, learning to paint, etc. (All these are learnings as well – Underrated learnings). But most of the time we associate it with some Tech certifications only (Overrated learnings). I agree that technical skills are important in the Industry, but associating learning with only these skills is incorrect. We should focus on learning one new thing every day – be it a course, a technology, a skill, or anything.

Every new day gives us another chance to live life and create magic. Every New year brings in New Hope and New Beginnings. Let this year bring in the change in how we perceive learning. Let’s not stick to only learning for certifications, but let’s grab every opportunity and every moment to LEARN to bring in CHANGE.
